Welcome to The Hiking Backpacks. By accessing or using this website, you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the site.
About This Site
The Hiking Backpacks covers the gear a day hiker or weekend backpacker actually carries: daypacks, overnight packs, trekking poles, water filters and packable travel daypacks. Every piece is written from real use on local trails and on trips, with the fit problems, leaks and annoyances left in, so you can decide what is worth buying before you are three miles from the car.

Trail Safety
Hiking carries real risk, and no pack, pole or filter removes it. Check the weather and trail conditions before you go, carry more water than you think you need, and tell someone where you are going and when you expect to be back.
A portable water filter like the ones reviewed here is designed to remove bacteria and protozoa. It does not remove viruses, chemicals or heavy metals, so read the manufacturer's instructions, pick the cleanest source you can, and treat water further where viruses or runoff are a concern. Protect a hollow-fiber filter from freezing, which can damage it without any visible sign.
An overloaded or badly fitted pack can strain your back, shoulders and hips. Adjust the torso length and hip belt to your body, keep heavy items close to your spine, and build up distance and pack weight gradually. Trekking poles help on descents but need practice, so set the length correctly and use the straps as the maker intends.
If you fly with your gear, check your airline's and the TSA's current rules before packing poles, knives, stoves or fuel in a carry-on. Nothing on this site is medical advice. Talk to a doctor before starting a new activity if you have a heart, joint or other health condition.
